Pear crumble… mmmm…It’s a bite of warm gooey fruit in molten butter, with crumbly topping with a hint of cinnamon. It’s a bite of comfort.
Last Sunday was a big dinner at home. 8 families. About 30 people including kids. A big menu and 3 cooks. Actually except for making aaloo tikkis (potato cutlets) for starters; I was more like a kitchen help to the other two boys! So when it was 4pm and guests were to arrive at 5pm and a lot was still left; things were going crazy in the kitchen. And I decided to make them crazier by starting to make something off the menu decided – pear crumble, just for us. We had eaten a brunch at 11am and since then no one had eaten anything even though everyone was with food!
So I decided we were worth a pear crumble and all the sugar and the butter it brings :)!
Pear Crumble
By Ashima Goyal Siraj
Preparation time: |Cooking time: |Serves: 3 (but I can finish it all on my own!)
2 pears, firm
¼ cup castor sugar
For the crumble:
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup castor sugar
½ tsp cinnamon powder
~75 gms of butter, melted
- Preheat oven to 200C
- Peel, core and dice the pears into small cubes. Put in a bowl. Sprinkle ¼ cup sugar.
- Mix well and keep aside.
- In another bowl, combine together flour, sugar and cinnamon. Add in melted butter slowly and mix with your hands until the mixture resembles soft bread crumbs.
- Butter a small oven proof dish. Pour the pear cubes into the bottom of the dish. Top with crumb topping.
- Bake at 200C for 40 minutes until the crumble topping is browned and the fruit mix is bubbling from the sides!
- I literally had to hold myself from eating it directly from that pan as soon as I got it out! Really marvel at my patience (which lasted just about 5 minutes) till I served it with vanilla ice-cream in 3 bowls for each of us :).
