Since I’m in uttarakhand right now, volunteering at a village, I thought I will access some of my older recipes and images that I have not posted yet. And I saw the image of these potato and cheese balls and remembered how excited I was while trying them as my bright new vegetable steamer had just come 🙂
These steamed potato and cheese balls were the inaugural dish of my new bright new tupperware steamer :). Until now I rarely used steaming. Mostly to steam some veggies to go with grilles meat, which I could do on a calendar atop a pot of boiling water. But now I want to go a step further; try momos and dimsums at home. That’s the why the new addition to my kitchen gadgets. The steamer is expensive but it’s worth the price. Pretty sturdy and I know I am going to use it for quite some years!
These steamed potato and cheese balls make for a quick healthy and delectable snack. In this recipe, I have given them an Indian chaat flavour but they taste amazing with Italian seasoning as well. Since it was just a trial, I made a small batch of around 12 balls and they were gobbled up before I knew! 🙂
Steamed Potato and Cheese Balls
By Ashima Goyal Siraj
Preparation time: |Cooking time: |Serves: 4 (Makes 12 balls)
250 gms potatoes (I used 2 large)
100 gms soft cottage cheese
2 green chillies, chopped
½ cup Fresh coriander and mint leaves, chopped
½ tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp dry mango powder (amchoor)
4 tsp chaat masala
2 tsp roasted cumin powder (bhuna zeera)
Salt to taste
3-4 Lettuce wraps/ leaves for steaming
- Pressure cook potatoes with a little water for about 2 whistles in the pressure cooker. We want the potatoes only par-boiled as the potatoes will be further cooked while steaming. Once boiled; keep them aside to air dry. Peel and grate along with cottage cheese.
- Mix together all ingredients in a mixing bowl and make small balls (approx. ~2inch diameter)
- Line the steamer with lettuce leaves and place the balls on top of them.
- Steam for 5 minutes
- As soon as you take the balls out of steamer, they will look a little soggy. Let them sit for a minute before serving
- Serve on lettuce leaves.
